Word of the Week – 2/1/22 (Gen 1)

"In the beginning God ..."

Genesis 1:1

As we here at Hust Roost Farm embark on this new task of writing a weekly Bible devotional, what better place to start than the first verse in the Bible: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” – Genesis 1:1. This well known, though often overlooked, verse has to be one of the most profound, consequential sentences ever written. It immediately brings us face to face with the fact that there is a God and that he is the supreme creator of the entire universe. The Bible does not try to prove God’s existence, nor does it speculate about it … it assumes it. It assumes an eternal God who exists outside of time and history (“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty” – Revelation 1:8.)

The ten simple words in this opening verse proclaim God’s existence and state the fact that He created the heavens and the earth. As we contemplate this verse and the rest of the opening chapter of the Bible, it can easily lead us head on into the whole creation vs evolution debate. I remember as a teenager and as a young adult (before I became a believer) thinking about the origin of the universe. Although I suppose I had accepted evolution, I always struggled with the idea that human life was a random thing that happened over billions of years after a cosmic explosion that created something out of nothing. Looking at all the incredibly complex designs in the human body and throughout the universe always seemed to point me towards an intelligent designer/creator.

It took me a number of years, but in the end, I have come to believe that our existence is not an accident. The world did not just pop into existence on its own. “God created the heavens and the earth” to reflect his goodness and his glory (“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” – Psalm 19:1.) More specifically, you are no accident. Each and every one of us have been uniquely created by God for his glory (“Everyone who is called by My name, whom I created for My glory, I have formed him, yes, I have made him” – Isaiah 43:7.) Wherever God has currently placed you, whatever roles in life God has given you, remember that the God who created the heavens and the earth has you there for a reason.

  1. Amen! Oh, how He loves us! To create us, to instruct us for our good…and to make a way for us to be with Him eternally after blatant disobedience of that instruction, and the blatant disobedience of our own sins. Creation is evidence of a Creator. Fulfilled prophecy is evidence of His Word. What an amazing God we serve!
